I love the show LOST. Pretty much I have been going through withdrawal symptoms until this season comes (which is supposed to be the final season). Jack (one the left above) has this power struggle of trying to figure out what his level of leadership is. The entire group of survivors look to him for everything. It just comes natural. But most of the times Jack isn't ready to step up to the challenge.

How do you handle God's call to leadership? Do you accept it. Embrace it. Run from it. Jump from church to church? Hide in the secular world hoping God won't find you can convict you of your true calling?

First, the Macs... now this. I will fast and pray for your soul. I will refrain from any "Lost" puns.

Seriously, good question (I'm so glad you put up with me, dude).

I'm starting to see, in our churches, that liminality reveals leadership. Alan Hirsch, in his book "The Forgotten Ways", talks a lot about liminality, which is a period of marginalization, confusion, with possible threats to the survival of a person/group. Obviously, the people of Lost are, well, lost (there's the liminality). Matthew Fox's character has kind of risen to the top. He then faces the choice--to lead, or not to lead (I guess. I've never seen the show. On purpose.).

In our situation, my wife and I announced the possibility of our leaving next year. In just one month, two guys have stepped up their game and will be trained to be elders. Another couple revealed that our possible move has got them giving serious thought to starting a new church in our network.

Liminality reveals leadership... and liminality gives those potential leaders a choice: to lead, or to cave in to the pressure.
